Dick Shilts

For over 37 years, teaching basketball fundamentals in a variety of settings has been a large part of Dick Shilts’ life.  After playing at Wittenberg University (OH), Dick accepted a teaching and coaching position at Wadsworth (OH) in 1965.  One year later he moved into the head job, inheriting a team that had won only 4 of its last 38 games.  Wadsworth went undefeated in league play that inaugural season, winning the Chippewa Conference.  In 1968 Shilts moved on to Akron University where he earned his Master’s Degree in Physical Education.  Shilts served as a graduate assistant for one year and a full time assistant the second year, coaching the Junior Varsity team to two successful developmental years.

Shilts arrived in Kalamazoo (MI) in the fall of 1969 to assist his former coach, Eldon Miller, in a  rebuilding effort at Western Michigan University.  The 1975-76 squad captured the school’s first ever undisputed Mid-American Conference basketball title.  The Broncos made it to the “Sweet Sixteen” in the NCAA tournament, finishing with a 25-3 record and a number 10 national ranking in the final AP poll.  While coaching the defense on this record setting team, Shilts implemented and refined concepts about his unique approach to his man-to-man “diamond” defense.  In April of 1976 Shilts was promoted to head basketball coach at WMU.  The Broncos fell on hard times in 1978 and 1979 and Shilts was replaced.

He then accepted the challenge of being Athletic Director,  Basketball Coach, and Golf Coach at nearby Kalamazoo Valley Community College.  The Cougars responded with a school best 19-9 record in his first season as their coach.  Twenty-one of the next twenty-two years have witnessed the Cougars sport winning records.  Averaging over 21 wins per season, KVCC has captured four conference and five MCCAA State Championships during his tenure as coach.   Shilts has been honored by being named Conference Coach of the Year and MCCAA State Coach of the Year five times.  In 1997 he was inducted into the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan’s Hall of Fame.  He has also directed over 130 highly successful summer basketball camps spanning over three decades.
