Greater Kalamazoo Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies Held
On Tuesday night, October 28, 2003, at the Gull Lake Country Club the Greater Kalamazoo Golf Hall of Fame added its 2003 recipients. They were John Allen, Carol Harding, Jack Moss, Jim Scott, Charlie Scott, and the entire teams of the 1963-64-65 MHSAA State Class B Championship men's golf team and the 1994-95-96 Kalamazoo Central MCCAA State Championship women's golf teams. It was a special night for some special folks who have gained a place in the golf history of the Greater Kalamazoo area. Members of the University High 3 time state champions included spokesman Jack Tobias, John Manske, Tom Schwarz, Bunky VanderSalm, Jeff Rhuland, Rob Hammond, Floyd Scott, and Pat Gallagher.
Coach Vic Callahan's women's golf team dominated high school golf in the state for three seasons, defeating 508 of the 510 teams they went up against. The 1996 team defeated all 187 teams it faced, won the regional tournament by 71 strokes and the state tourney by 29 strokes. The 1994 team beat 164 teams. Its only loss was by one shot to Traverse City in a 36-hole event. The team won the regional by 44 shots and the state by 34. The 1995 team beat 170 teams in tournaments, jamborees and dual matches, with the only loss being to Jackson Lumen Christi in the East Lansing Invitational. The team won the regional by 68 strokes and the state tournament by 57 shots. Individually, the team took the first four spots in the regional and all four players were in the first seven at state. The girls hold the low state tournament record at Forest Akers with a 36 hole score of 687. Jackie and Michelle Biro, Beth Cooper and Danielle Strong were members of all three teams. Mindi (Shilts) Freng was on the 1994 title team and Sheree Hoover on the last two. The girls stood out on the course and in the classroom and always had a cumulative 3.5 GPA or better. The 1996 team not only won the state title, but was also the No. 1 ranked scholastic team in the state. Cooper was selected as Miss Golf for the State of Michigan in 1996 and Shilts was the MHSAA Golf Scholarship Athlete of the Year in 1994.
This was a very special night for some very special folks.
